Success in Organic farming

Extract from Case Study - CWS Gunthaguda success

Adu Nayak belongs to other backward caste (Rana). He lives with his wife, son and mother in Gunthaguda village of Mahadeiput GP. He has five acres of land but due to scarcity of man power he cultivates only three acres and puts the rest two acres to share cropping. He used to grow paddy in two acres and Ragi and Niger in the rest part. His annual harvest consists of 10 quintal of paddy, 2 quintal of Ragi and 1 to 2 quintal of Niger. However he used to sell away Niger (Rs 1500/- to 2500/- on an average in a year) to meet his daily consumption needs (vegetables, salt, oil, etc.).

Since last four years he has started vegetable cultivation in one acre of land as the income from sale of Niger was not adequate to meet the other expenses of his family. He has been selling vegetables worth Rs 3000/- to Rs 4000/- per annum besides catering to consumption needs of his family. But he thinks that in comparison to investment for chemical fertilizers and pesticides (on an average of Rs 2000/- per annum), the profit is quite insignificant. He was quite convinced that without using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, vegetable cultivation would not be possible.

In June 2007 Adu got an opportunity to participate in a training programme on SRI and organic practices organized by Pragati at Koraput.Though he was quite skeptical that by adopting organic practices he may not be able to earn a profit, yet he decided to experiment in a small patch of land. He purchased 20gm of brinjal seeds and cultivated 20 cents of land. He applied only cowdung, farm yard manure and 10 kg. of vermi compost and kept a close watch.

Needy’s Friend

An extract from Case Study - CWS Balipetaguda

Gobardhan Kamara lives in Balipetaguda village of Kendar GP with his family consisting of his wife and only daughter. He owns two acres of land out of which 0.5 acre are low land where he grows two crops (paddy). Besides he also grows Ragi and Niger in the uplands during the rainy season. The harvest supports his family for four to five months. For the rest of part of the year he has to search for wage labour or resort to wood and charcoal trade.

He had a pair of bullocks of his own which he used for ploughing and other agriculture activities. Unfortunately last year, before onset of monsoon, (May 2007) one of the bullocks died suddenly and the other fell ill for a long time. Gobardhan couldn’t think of any other alternative. His financial condition was not so sound that he could immediately purchase a bullock. Though he had some savings from his wage labour, it was not adequate to purchase a bullock. He couldn’t even venture to ask for a loan from the money lender as he would have to pay high rate of interest. If he fails to repay the loan in time, then the sahukar will take away the bullock. He was in a fix.

He thought of an idea. He had become a member of Luhaguli Farmer’s Association facilitated by Pragati to organize the farmers of Kendar and Manbar Pnachyats and promote Sustainable Agriculture through organic practices. There are now 94 farmers in the Association who are adopting organic practices.

Observation of “No Pesticide Use Day”

3rd December 2007

Luhaguli Farmer’s Association, Kendar Budhima Farmer’s Association, Mahadeiput and Watershed User’s Society of Paknajholla Watershed, Daleiput  in collaboration with Pragati, Koraput had organized a peace rally to observe “No Pesticide Use Day” on 3rd December 2007 that  commemorates the  anniversary of Bhopal Carbide Gas tragedy. More than 100 farmers from 2 Mahadeiput and Kendar Gram Panchayats participated in the rally that marched through the town of Koraput wearing green masks. The farmers participating in the rally expressed concern over the growing use of pesticides in the remote areas of the district which is harmful for the users as well as the ecology and vowed to stop further use of pesticides in their areas and spread the message of organic farming. Most of the farmers do not even take precautionary measures while applying these pesticides in their farmyards and throw the containers in open spaces and sometimes in water bodies which increases vulnerability of health hazards and also risky for small children and livestock. The Panchayati Raj representatives of the two GPs further expressed their solidarity by saying that they would also extend cooperation towards prevention of sale and use of pesticides in their Panchayats. The event was facilitated by Pragati, Koraput as a part of campaign for ecological farming.
