COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
The Project:
In a tribal dominated district like Koraput where people in general are deprived of the basic civic and humane rights, the condition of persons with disability is further insecure. They cannot even enjoy their basic right to primary education, health services or access government welfare schemes. They are deprived of social security measures like Annapurna, Antodaya, Indira Awas Scheme and even wage employment under MGNREGS as they do not have the capacity to bargain for their entitlements, neither do they have any spokesperson to bargain for their rights in the Panchayat level institutions where beneficiaries are selected. They often lead a life of familial, social and political exclusion.
We are implementing a project for Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) for Persons With disabilities with support of CBR Forum, Banglore from April 2009 with a goal to create a platform for persons with disability so that they may have equal opportunities to access their rights, economic resources, education and inclusion in social mainstream.
Specific Objectives:
- To ensure that there is good rapport with the community and families and conduct need assessment of PWDs in the area.
- To identify plans for preventive and promotive health in the community.
- To be knowledgeable in curative and rehabilitative services in the area.
- To commence the work of certification.
- To give children and adults access to appropriate education.
- To identify and establish links with skill development organization in and around the project areas.
- To make Income Generation Activities available (IGA).
- To explore possibility of generating employment for PWDs in organized and unorganized sector.
- To promote sustainability - self governance - in planning, monitoring and evaluation of the CBR Programme.
