DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PROJECT
The Project:
In the aftermath of the massive landslides and flashfloods in August 2006 Pragati has undertaken some relief and rehabilitation work for the affected and vulnerable families. Based on the context and need of communities we have started the implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction Project in February 2009 with support of Trocaire, Ireland. The project covers 25 villages of 5 vulnerable GPs comprising of 1945 households.
So far communities have formed 25 Village Development Committees and 25 Task Force in 25 villages. The following activities for Community based disaster preparedness and risk reduction will be implemented during the first year.
- Staff Training on DRR concept, contingency planning and government plans and programmes.
- Awareness generation at village level on the nature of disasters, vulnerability situations, risk scenario and hazards.
- Capacity building of VDC Leaders on risk analysis, vulnerability mapping, resource management & mobilization of government plans and programmes.
- Skill development of Task Force members on role and responsibility of taskforce, contingency planning, Government plans and programmes for DRR, emergency operations like damage assessment, first aid and relief services.
- PRI Orientation on DRR and contingency planning so that they can participate in the process and approval of the same in Gram Sabha.
- Preparation of Community Contingency Plans in 25 villages for risk and vulnerability mapping and help identify preparedness measures.
- Quarterly meeting of Task force.
- Media consultation to highlight the issues of people in our action area and draw the attention of district administration and line departments.
- Interface with line departments to create a platform for better understanding between the community and government officials.
- Capacity building of Taskforce leaders on Natural Resource Management, on innovative skills of utilization of resources and on proper management of land, water and forests that would help in augmentation of their livelihood and ensure food security.
- Land Development for demonstration of developing 20 ha in one village affected by landslides in 2006. so that the lands are reclaimed for agriculture purposes and livelihood of the villagers can be restored.
- SKP for 65 households affected by landslides in 2006 and to date have not received any support either from Government.or any other aid agencies.
