COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
The Project:
The Project is under implementation since 2003 in one GP, extended to 3 GPs in 2005. In November 2009 a new phase of the project started covering 58 villages of 4 Gram Panchayats namely Badel, Balda, Bheja and Thuba of Nandapur block in Koraput District, Odisha with support of Trocaire Ireland. The 4 GPs comprise 3460 households with a population of 13837 (7063 men, 6774 women).
Goal:
To strengthen local Civil Society Organizations so that marginalised men and women have continuous access to and control over natural resources, to mobilize government funds for livelihood security of vulnerable families and to achieve gender equity in 4 Gram Panchayats of Koraput District by 2015.
Specific objectives:
- To ensure livelihood security of 60% of project households through CSO's influencing good governance for transformative change with equal participation of men and women, focusing in particular on the proper implementation of the FRA and MGNREGA.
- To ensure sustainable resource management of 1000 small and marginal farmers through capacity building, demonstration of land and water management, SRI and organic practices and reduce migration.
- Strengthen the Self Help Cooperative for livelihood promotion of 500 vulnerable house holds through collective savings and credit for income generation.
Key Achievements:
- Communities formed 42 Village Development Committees and 3 Panchayat level CBOs .They are able to identify their problems and liaise with PRIs and line departments for mobilization of government plans and programmes.VDCs are formed in new GP area.
- VDC and CBOs leaders presenting their issues in Palli Sabha/Gram Sabha and demanding fair selection of beneficiaries under government schemes.
- Communities protecting 54 ha miscellaneous plantations and 138 ha orchard plantations in 21 villages.
- Soil and moisture retention capacity, enhanced crop yield in 70 ha of land developed through bundings, 5% model pits and gully plugging.
- 107 farmers raise multiple crops by lift irrigation points.
- 87 farmers adopting System of Rice Intensification (SRI) got higher yields.
- 167 farmers stopped using of chemical fertilizers and adopting organic practices.
- 41 Grain banks with stock of 157.21 qnt food grains catering to needy families.
- 66 SHGs covering 817 women members (BPL - 538, landless - 95 Women headed - 51 Women with disability - 49) accumulated own savings of Rs 8,11.311/- and 19 SHGs enhanced their income with support amount of Rs 110,000/-.
- The Self Help Cooperative is registered with a total membership of 400.
- 87 landless and women headed families take up different income generation programmes.
- 135 beneficiaries receiving support for bullock pairs under Shakti Sahaya Scheme earn an additional income of Rs 7,000/- to 23,000/-
